Remember the milk for Irish phones….

RTMI think this is pretty cool; you can connect Remember The Milk(RTM) and Twitter to your phone so that you can use Twitter or a text to send tasks to RTM. And then RTM will send you a text and an email reminding you to do things at a certain time.

I’ve been using remember the milk for a while now. I really needed a to-do list / task reminder that could really grab my attention and is also very easy to update. A lot of task apps that sit on my desktop just become invisible to me very quickly. As do gmail tasks. But the fact that RTM can send you texts really grabbed my attention and comes highly recommended but only when its hooked up with your phone is it a really powerful task reminder.

But it mostly only supports mobile networks in the US and other countries – but not Ireland. I’ve been checking back every now and then to see if they support Irish mobiles yet and they still don’t. But there’s a great way around it;

First you follow a special Twitter account http://twitter.com/rtm so that task reminders are sent to your Twitter account.
Then you set up Twitter so that it sends you texts when you get a new tweet. Lots of people do that anyway but if you’re like me and use the mobile version of Twitter on your phone then, like me, you’ve probably never bothered getting Twitter as texts. So I just turned off phone updates from everyone I follow except @rtm.

So now I can send @rtm a direct message like “take the bread out of the oven at 2:45pm” (I actually left bread in the oven for 2 hours longer than I should have yesterday. Dough!) And at 2:45 I’ll get a text and an email telling me to take the bread out of the oven. No more burnt bread! And I could have set that task up quickly from tweetdeck, from a text, or from the RTM site. And that’s all with the free version of RTM.

There’s more on twitter and rtm here: http://www.rememberthemilk.com/services/twitter/ . I gotta go RTM just sent me a text reminding me to record some of the Shane Meadows season on Film4.

    I’m not one for getting text message reminders, think I’d go mad with that – but I’ve been searching for a way to organise for ages – I even tried a DB I made myself. Nothing really worked – I’d looked at RTM before, but didn’t want it online-only either. But… problem solved: RTM + http://blog.rememberthemilk.com/2009/10/app-for-the-milk-brings-your-tasks-to-the-desktop/
    Cracking!

    Yeah I guess it depends on usage. I wouldn’t want to get a load of tasks. I only use it for personal stuff, not work, so I only get a few a day. Saved me burning sausage rolls yesterday. Head like a sieve with stuff like that. Have just installed the desktop, will give it a go, might be overkill for me with my setup now though. Have it integrated with gmail too. RTM is everywhere!

    Hello John, After viewing your atheist section I think you are more anti-religon than anything else. Would you agree that there may be states of energy that we just do not understand yet? I hate religon myself, to my mind religon is the bane of mankind, has caused nowt much but war, misery, slavery, burning at stakes etc…
    You certainly aint’ stupid John, Im sure you must have thought about such things as self awareness, why existance rather than nothing, lots of stuff. Important? nah. Interesting? for me, abso-feckin-looootly. The possability that my ‘life’ may extend beyond this physical body is fasinating. What, if anything may be ahead?. Care to comment? Ah go on.

    P.S. just for a laugh. You wrote “That soul-eating suckbox”. Soul? carefull now or peeps will get the wrong idea!

    Laters.

      Hi Jonathan – Aha – thought I recognised the name.

      To be honest I’ve kind of got the whole philosophical debate type stuff out of my system. So didn’t feel I had much to say to your previous comment.

      But just on the anti-religion V Atheist thing; they’re both very different things that are often tied together. Obviously a believer can still despise organised religion. I’m not more anti-religion. I’m simply both. I’m anti-religion *and* an Atheist. I have no more time for gods than I do in crystal healing, angels, horoscopes or leprechauns.

      Oh go on on then I’ll have a little slice of your philosophical pie; I don’t believe in life after death. We’re worm food. Game over. I can’t think of any reason to believe in any form of life after death. Bacteria dies. Leaves die. Moss dies. Insects die. People die. There’s nothing to separate all those lifeforms other than evolution. And at no point in evolution did man gain a soul. Apart from a zest for life in the here and now. The fact that we’re here now, against all odds is fascinating enough for me.
